NASHVILLE, Tenn. — On the evening of July 26, a Metro Nashville police officer fatally shot Nashville resident Daniel Hambrick. The 25-year-old officer, Andrew Delke, is white and Hambrick, also 25, was Black.
A video released by the Davidson County district attorney shows Daniel Hambrick being shot by Officer Delke as Hambrick ran away. Hambrick was hit twice in the back and once in the back of the head.
After a night magistrate initially denied the district attorney's request for an arrest warrant, a general sessions judge found probable cause to support a criminal homicide charge against the officer.
American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee executive director Hedy Weinberg released the following statement in response:
“The arrest of Officer Delke for the killing of Daniel Hambrick is a crucial first step in setting the wheels of accountability and justice in motion. Officer Delke must receive due process during the proceedings. However, the arrest in and of itself sends an important – yet all too rare – message to the community that nobody is above the law.”
