NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The American Civil Liberties Union of Tennessee (ACLU-TN) announces Kathy Sinback’s departure from the role of executive director. During her two-year tenure, Sinback led significant advancements in ACLU-TN’s programmatic work, modernized its structure, and built capacity for organizational growth and impact.
Hallmarks during Sinback’s tenure include building a policy program that coordinates legislative strategy with targeted organizing and frontline community engagement; achieving major legal and legislative victories, including preliminary injunctions against the legislature’s sign ban and anti-transgender driver license and healthcare laws; addressing issues with voting integrity and voter suppression; and defeating a law banning Pride flags in schools.
ACLU-TN Board President David Taylor stated, "We are grateful for Kathy’s service as she departs an ACLU-TN that is more formidable than ever as a force for civil rights and liberties in Tennessee.”
Kathy Sinback stated, “It was an honor for me to build on the work of the legendary Hedy Weinberg and to help position ACLU-TN for future success. It is evident now more than ever that we need nonpartisan organizations like ACLU-TN to unite people around common values such as freedom, democratic participation, due process, and respect for our neighbors.”
The ACLU-TN Board of Directors has named Phyllida Burlingame as interim executive director and is initiating a search for a permanent executive director.
