January 14, 2025 marks the start of the 2025 legislative session and the beginning of the 114th General Assembly.
State legislation is deeply tied to our civil liberties. Every bill has the potential to either expand our rights or diminish our rights, impacting nearly every aspect of our lives.
Emboldened by a second Trump administration, we have already begun to witness some legislators further amplify manipulative, fear-driven narratives to push discriminatory and unconstitutional bills that target immigrants, ban books, burden low-income families, threaten the safety and well-being of Black and Brown folks, dismantle the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, and prevent Tennesseans from voting.
Here at the ACLU of Tennessee – knowing what urgent fights lie ahead during the 2025 legislative session – we are dedicated to working alongside legislators, partner organizations, and our supporters to protect our rights, connect lawmakers with Tennesseans directly affected by the bills they write, and defeat harmful legislation that threatens freedom for us all.
Together, with your help, we will cultivate a thriving democracy in Tennessee and ensure dignity and equity for everyone under the law.
What will ACLU-TN be fighting for at the legislature this year?
- Reproductive justice by working to protect and expand access to contraception and fertility treatments like IVF and ensuring freedom from further restrictions on abortion,
- Self-determination and bodily autonomy without government oppression for trans and gender non-conforming people,
- expanded access to the ballot box in Tennessee,
- the rights of immigrants to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their immigration status, are treated with dignity and respect.
We also anticipate working to defeat dangerous legislation that undermines racial justice, bans books and otherwise restricts freedom of speech, and discriminates against the LGBTQ+ community.
