What To Do Before "I DO!" ACLU-TN's Marriage Guide for LGBT Couples in Tennessee
All loving and committed same-sex couples now have the freedom to marry, thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Obergefell v. Hodges.
Obergefell is a consolidated case that challenged laws in Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio that discriminated against same-sex couples and prohibited marriage. ACLU is proud to be counsel on the Ohio and Kentucky petitions, and to have filed an amicus brief in the Tennessee case, Tanco v. Haslam.
We are working with Tanco v. Haslam attorneys Phillip F. Cramer of Sherrard & Roe, PLC; John L. Farringer IV of Sherrard & Roe, PLC; William L. Harbison of Sherrard & Roe, PLC; J. Scott Hickman of Sherrard & Roe, PLC; Maureen T. Holland of Holland & Associates, PC; Regina M. Lambert, Esq. and Abby Rubenfeld of Rubenfeld Law Office, PC, and our partners at the Tennessee Equality Project to ensure that the Obergefell decision is implemented as smoothly as possible in Tennessee.
ACLU-TN has prepared helpful information outlining what the Court’s decision in Obergefell means for Tennessee residents and how to navigate the requirements for getting married in Tennessee.
