ACLU-TN “Freedom to Be” Townhall: Supreme Court Debrief on U.S. v. Skrmetti

December 10, 2024 @ 6:00 pm 7:00 pm

This December, the ACLU and families from Tennessee will argue a landmark transgender justice case, U.S. v. Skrmetti, in front of the U.S. Supreme Court. This historic case could decide whether trans people have the same rights under the U.S. Constitution as everyone else, and will have far-reaching implications across the country on our bodily autonomy – from trans people’s access to health care, as well as states’ ability to ban health care like IVF and birth control.

On Tuesday, Dec. 10 – the week after oral arguments – ACLU-TN, alongside our partners OUTMemphis and Tennessee Equality Project (confirming), will host a virtual debrief featuring ACLU-TN staff attorney Lucas Cameron-Vaughn, plaintiff Dr. Susan Lacy (confirm), and Tennessee activists who attended ACLU’s Freedom to Be Rally on the steps of the Supreme Court (confirm) to discuss the hearing and what the outcome of the case means for Tennessee families moving forward.

We’ll come together as a statewide community to discuss the wide-ranging impact of the case, break down important moments from oral arguments, share highlights from the Supreme Court rally, answer questions about how the case will impact communities here, and talk about how we can work together to defend trans freedom at the legislature and during a second Trump administration.
