Elected officials decide policies on abortion rights. We decide which elected officials will be making those decisions. That’s why voting is so important this election cycle. 

Everybody should have the freedom to make their own decisions about the use of birth control, fertility treatments, and access to abortion, free from interference from politicians. And the overwhelming majority of people in our state agree. 

These are decisions for the person, their family, and their doctor — not for politicians. 

Public education improves communities, reduces inequalities, forges common experiences, and strengthens democracy. Yet, public schools often face inadequate funding, and some Tennessee politicians support diverting already scarce resources away from public schools, which will only exacerbate the challenges our children face. 

By taking resources away from public schools and discriminating against certain families, legislators are sending a clear message that they are turning their backs on some of Tennessee’s children. 

A vocal minority of people are attempting to speak for parents in Shelby County and across the state to ban books that address LGBTQ+ rights, race and racism, and other marginalized identities as part of a coordinated attack on inclusive education. Book bans effectively gag educators and students by deliberately burdening educators and undermining our progress toward a more inclusive and truthful education system. 

The U.S. Supreme Court has repeatedly held that banning books because they offend some runs afoul of the First Amendment. While parents have the right to guide their own children’s education, that right does not extend to restricting other students’ educational opportunities. 

We should all have the freedom to be ourselves and live our lives. Yet, across the country and right here in Tennessee, transgender people and their families are under attack by politicians who want to control our bodies, families and lives for their political gain.

The same political playbook that overturned Roe v. Wade is being used to target transgender people’s health care, and this assault on our freedom won’t end there. 
These extreme and dangerous policies have prevented Tennesseans from accessing the evidence-based and medically necessary care they need and forced families to leave the state they call home. 

These dangerous efforts to control our bodies and our families threaten the well-being of our children, the safety of our communities, and the ability of every family to determine what’s best for their child. 

Too many Tennessee politicians use bail reform as an easy scapegoat for their unwillingness to prioritize real solutions that increase public safety and save taxpayer dollars. We can’t let them keep up that charade.

Constitutional bail practices significantly benefit individuals, communities and county budgets. Locking up our loved ones and neighbors isn’t a solution. We don’t have to choose between safety and justice; we can have both. This is only possible if we return to an evidence-based, fair and constitutional bail system.

We all deserve to be safe. That’s why we need elected officials who are committed to making housing more affordable, helping people with mental health and addiction problems, providing good education, and creating jobs. 

We can't solve homelessness, addiction and poverty by arresting people. Our vision is a state where the culture of law enforcement agencies is transformed to reflect the communities they serve, where police and sheriff departments are transparent and accountable to the people they are sworn to protect, and where no individual feels suspicious of or unsafe around the police— regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex, gender, mental health, ability or socioeconomic status
